Saint Gerard Majella (1726-1755)
Gerard Majella was born on April 6, 1726, in the small town of Muro in southern Italy. Already in his childhood he had strong religious experiences, which were apparently fostered by a special mystical disposition. At the same time, he was of failing health since his childhood days.
Gerard first learned the tailor's trade and later joined the domestic service of the bishop of Lacedogna. In 1745, at the age of 19, he returned to his hometown and opened his own tailor's shop, with the income from which he provided for his family - his father had already died. Otherwise, he gave much of what he acquired to the poor or spent it on Mass scholarships for the benefit of poor souls.
There was no conspicuous vocational experience in Gerard. What is striking, however, is the great intensity of his religiosity. During Lent in 1747, he made it his explicit resolution to become as much like Christ as possible. To achieve this goal, he practiced hard ascesis in prayer, fasting, and penance.
In his desire to serve God fully, Gerard asked for admission to the Capuchins, but was refused. He also tried for a time to live as a hermit. Contact with the Redemptorists came about in 1749 during a popular mission in Muro. Gerard ran after the missionaries when they left and begged until they took him on probation despite misgivings about his frail health.
On July 16, 1752, Gerard took his vows as a lay brother in Deliceto. From then on he served in that monastery as a porter, tailor, gardener, cook and carpenter. At the same time he participated in the apostolic activities of the community. Thus he accompanied the Fathers on missions. He could say joyful and profound things when he spoke of God, Jesus Christ or Mary in catechesis or in personal conversation. At the monastery gate he was a sought-after spiritual advisor. In everything Gerard distinguished himself by faithfulness and obedience, but he also often cultivated an exaggerated submissiveness towards the superiors.
Even during his lifetime Gerard had the reputation of a saint and miracle worker. He was said to have paranormal behavior and talents, such as floating above the ground in moments of ecstasy. Furthermore, it was said that he was once in two places at the same time and that on another occasion he called back to life a boy who had died in an accident. Even if today we look critically at such reports, they reflect an extraordinary religious character.
In his dealings with people, Gerard was able to develop a surprising knowledge of the soul. Again and again he told people their hidden transgressions straight to their faces and thereby brought about conversion and repentance. This gift of soul-seeing may be considered a special fruit of his mystical disposition. It makes him comparable to other saintly personalities such as the Curé of Ars or Padre Pio.
Of great importance for Gerard was the explicit orientation to the will of God. With this attitude he met the different situations of his life. Even in the darknesses of his soul, his availability to the will of God remained unbroken. "The Lord means well with me," he used to say. And on the door of his cell he is said to have written, "Here you do the will of God."
Gerard's devotion to God was rooted in the depths of his heart and was nourished by a great love of prayer and contemplation. He could spend hours before the tabernacle. In the process, he also experienced supernatural visions. Ultimately, his piety was deep participation in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
Weak health threw Gerard on the sick bed in 1755. He had spent the last period of his life in the monastery of Caposole-Materdomini. There he died on October 16 of that year at the age of only 29. He had lived in the Redemptorist community for only six years.
The veneration that had already begun during his lifetime continued uninterrupted after his death and increased more and more. Many miracles were attributed to Gerard's intercession. Nevertheless, he was beatified only in 1893 and canonized in 1904. To this day he is one of the most popular saints in southern Italy. He is venerated as the patron saint of mothers and children or - no less topical today than in earlier times - as the patron saint of expectant life. Many people turn to him in connection with pregnancy and childbirth, or even if the child is not born.
A miraculous incident that has been handed down has particularly contributed to this special side of Gerhard's veneration. It is said that the saint once forgot his handkerchief during a visit to a family. When one of the daughters called his attention to it, he is said to have said, "Just keep it, it will be useful to you one day." Years later, he says, the now-young woman was in mortal danger when she gave birth to a child. She had asked for the handkerchief and insisted on the danger and gave birth to a healthy child. Impossible that in the religious mentality of southern Italy such a narrative would remain without resonance.
